A PCS (permanent change of station) is one of the most stressful parts of military life. A little structure goes a long way. Here is a practical checklist to keep your move on track.
8 weeks out
- Read your orders carefully and confirm your report date.
- Schedule your move with the transportation office (or decide on a PPM/DITY move).
- Start a folder for receipts and important documents.
- Research your new base community and housing options.
4 weeks out
- Begin selling or donating what you do not want to move.
- Get school and medical records transferred.
- Book lodging for travel days.
Move week
- Keep a hand-carry bag with documents, medications, and valuables.
- Take photos of expensive items before they are packed.
- Do a final walkthrough of your old home.
After you arrive
- In-process at your new unit.
- Set up housing, utilities, and your new routine.
- Connect with the families already at your base so you are not starting from zero.
That last step is where Kithpost comes in. Find your base, meet your neighbors, and get the local intel that makes a new duty station feel like home faster.
